Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to obviate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years. The surface of COR-TEN steels is covered with a particularly thick iron oxide film which is responsible for the high rust resistance: It functions as a depletion layer which prevents another access of damp environment air and reduces another rust attack with that.
