The Carpinus betulus Fastigiata - column-hornbeam grows to medium sized tree from 5 m to 10 m, depending on the multi-stemmed, he can be up to 8 m wide. The crown is usually ovoid and vigorous root crooked.
The branches grow in young trees rather vertically and turn in old age in the horizontal. The crown is very dense and is composed of wide spreading branches of the lower section and vertically oriented branches of the upper range. Free-standing trees usually form a powerful, broad-oval crown.
The alternate leaves are four to ten inches long, two to four centimeters wide, pointed, oval, and at the end. The margin is cut twice. There are 10-15 veins standing parallel pairs. The underside of the leaves are hairy at first (at least in the corners of the leaf veins), but later bare. The autumn color is bright yellow, the sheets are partially in a brown state to spring on the branches. The young shoots are hairy shiny brown and weak. Later, they are brownish-gray and bare.
The site, sunny to shady, cool heat until warm layers, compatible, hardy and urban climate tolerated. A tree undemanding and beautiful.
The names such as hornbeam and hornbeam are derived from the Old High German "haganbuoche from" where hag "fencing", "hedge" means and refers to the cutting ability of the plant. The former, younger name is from the Middle Ages to grove "small forest" as a word formation to Hag, as hornbeam are klimatolerant and even thrive in the open field and can therefore form groves. The second part of the name "Book" comes from the superficial similarity to the European beech (size, shape and pattern nerves of the leaves, smooth bark ago), in other features (habit, fruit), hornbeam and beech are completely different. Of hornbeam is outrageous for the adjective rough, rough-as the hard, tough wood. The name is based on the hornbeam in contrast to the bright red beech wood color of the hornbeam.
